Pine Needle Weaving w/ Raffia

Workshop Overview

We’ll also explore cultures, both within the U.S. and around the world, that practice coiled basketry, and how this weaving tradition shows up in communities around the world. Participants will learn the basics of sustainable collection, cleaning, and preparation of pine needles. I’ll walk you through the process of creating a coiled pine needle basket using raffia as the binding thread. We’ll start by forming the center base, then build the walls, and finish with a secure closure (if you choose). We'll experiment with different stitching fibers such as raffia, artificial sinew, and waxed thread. You’ll also learn two different coiling techniques so you can find the rhythm and style that feels most natural to you. Everyone will leave with a new weaving skill and a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind coiled baskets. I’ll also have bundles of pine needles available for anyone who wants to continue weaving at home.
