Easter Basket Weaving
Bay Area

Workshop Overview
Participants will be guided through the process of creating a functional, handwoven basket while learning about the fibers, techniques, and cultures that have shaped basketry around the world. We’ll begin by getting to know reed, our working fiber. Where it comes I’ll share examples of twined and plaited weaving traditions practiced in the US and around the world. Participants will then dye their reed strips, creating custom color palettes that make each basket unique. I’ll demonstrate a plaiting technique for building the base, followed by twining for the basket walls, and lashing to securely finish the rim and attach the handle. To complete the piece, we’ll apply a protective varnish to preserve the color and extend the life of the basket. Participants who finish early will have the opportunity to decorate a gourd egg. No prior weaving experience is needed. You’ll leave with a finished Easter basket, new skills, and a deeper appreciation for the global language of basketry.
